Fried Calamari

Method

Preparation and Cooking

  1. 1

    Prepare the Squid

In a large bowl, combine the cleaned and cut squid rings with salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Toss well to ensure the squid is evenly coated with the seasoning. Set aside to marinate for about 15 minutes.

  2. 2

    Set Up Breading Station

In a shallow dish, combine the all-purpose flour and cornstarch. In another shallow dish, place the beaten eggs. In a third shallow dish, add the breadcrumbs. This will be your breading station.

  3. 3

    Bread the Squid

Take each piece of marinated squid and first dip it into the flour-cornstarch mixture, ensuring it is fully coated. Next, dip it into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, coat it with the breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere. Place the breaded squid on a plate and repeat until all squid is breaded.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the heat by dropping a small piece of bread into the oil; it should bubble and turn golden brown.

  5. 5

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the breaded squid rings to the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried calamari and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  6. 6

    Serve

Once all the calamari is fried, serve immediately with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
