Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

Cut in Butter
Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the unsalted butter into the dry mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Combine Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and egg until smooth.

Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

If using, fold in the dried cranberries and chopped walnuts gently into the dough.
Shaping and Baking

Shape the Dough
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently pat it into a rectangle about 1-inch thick. Cut into triangles or rounds.

Place the shaped scones onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them.
