Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until combined.

  3. 3

    Cut in Butter

Cut the cold butter into small cubes and add it to the dry mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Wet Ingredients Mixing

  1. 4

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.

Combine and Shape

  1. 5

    Mix Wet and Dry

Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet mixture. Stir gently with a spatula until just combined. If using, fold in dried cranberries or chocolate chips.

  2. 6

    Shape the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat it into a circle about 1 inch thick.

Baking

  1. 7

    Cut into Wedges

Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into 8 wedges. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart.

  2. 8

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown on top.

  3. 9

    Cool and Serve

Remove the scones from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Serve warm.
