Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix dry ingredients

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine wet ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.

  4. 4

    Combine wet and dry ingredients

Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

  5. 5

    Add boiling water

Slowly stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.

  6. 6

    Bake the cakes

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the cakes

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Ganache Preparation

  1. 8

    Heat the cream

In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer.

  2. 9

    Melt the chocolate

Remove the saucepan from heat and add the chocolate chips. Let sit for 5 minutes to soften.

  3. 10

    Stir until smooth

Whisk the mixture until fully combined and smooth. Allow the ganache to cool slightly before using.

Assembling the Cake

  1. 11

    Layer the cakes

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of ganache on top.

  2. 12

    Add second layer

Place the second cake layer on top of the ganache-covered layer.

  3. 13

    Cover with ganache

Pour the remaining ganache over the top of the cake, allowing some to drip down the sides.

  4. 14

    Serve

Let the ganache set for about 15 minutes before slicing and serving your chocolate cake.
