For the Calamari
For the Marinara Sauce
Method
Preparing the Marinara Sauce
- 1
- 2
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Pour in the crushed tomatoes. Add salt, black pepper, and dried oregano. Stir well to combine.
- 3
Simmer the Sauce
Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in chopped fresh basil just before serving.
Preparing the Calamari
- 4
Prepare the Coating
In a large bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and paprika.
- 5
Coat the Calamari
Dip each calamari ring into buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Then, dredge the rings in the flour mixture until well-coated. Shake off excess flour.
- 6
Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet or fryer, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).
- 7
Fry the Calamari
Carefully add coated calamari rings to the hot oil in batches, avoiding overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- 8
Serve
Serve the fried calamari hot with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
