Toppings

Method

Prepare the Burger Patty

  1. 1

    Mash the Black Beans

In a large bowl, mash the canned black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.

  2. 2

    Combine Ingredients

Add the cooked quinoa, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, ground cumin, chili powder, salt, black pepper, and the egg (or flax egg) to the mashed black beans. Mix until well combined.

  3. 3

    Form Patties

Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a burger patty.

  4. 4

    Chill the Patties

Place the patties on a plate and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up.

Cook the Burger Patties

  1. 5

    Heat Olive Oil

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

  2. 6

    Cook Patties

Once the oil is hot, carefully place the patties in the skillet. Cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown.

Assemble the Burger

  1. 7

    Prepare the Buns

Toast the burger buns lightly if desired.

  2. 8

    Layer Toppings

On the bottom half of each bun, place a lettuce leaf, followed by a black bean burger patty, a slice of tomato, avocado, and cheese (if using).

  3. 9

    Add Condiments

Top with ketchup and mustard as desired, then place the top half of the bun over the burger.
