Prepare the Burger Patty

Mash the Black Beans
In a large bowl, mash the canned black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.

Combine Ingredients
Add the cooked quinoa, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, ground cumin, chili powder, salt, black pepper, and the egg (or flax egg) to the mashed black beans. Mix until well combined.

Form Patties
Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a burger patty.

Chill the Patties
Place the patties on a plate and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up.
Cook the Burger Patties

Heat Olive Oil
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

Cook Patties
Once the oil is hot, carefully place the patties in the skillet. Cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown.
Assemble the Burger

Prepare the Buns
Toast the burger buns lightly if desired.

Layer Toppings
On the bottom half of each bun, place a lettuce leaf, followed by a black bean burger patty, a slice of tomato, avocado, and cheese (if using).
