For the Syrup

Method

Preparing the Baklava

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 2

    Prepare the Nuts

In a bowl, combine the chopped nuts, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon. Set aside.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Phyllo Dough

Unroll the phyllo dough and cover it with a damp towel to prevent it from drying out.

  4. 4

    Layer the Phyllo

Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Place one sheet of phyllo in the dish and brush it with more melted butter. Repeat this process, layering and buttering about 8 sheets.

  5. 5

    Add the Nut Mixture

Evenly spread a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo. Continue layering with 4 more sheets of phyllo, buttering each sheet, followed by another layer of nuts. Repeat this until all the nuts are used up, finishing with a top layer of about 8 sheets of phyllo, buttering each sheet.

  6. 6

    Cut the Baklava

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes, ensuring to cut through all layers.

  7. 7

    Bake the Baklava

Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the baklava is golden brown.

Preparing the Syrup

  1. 8

    Combine Syrup Ingredients

In a saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract.

  2. 9

    Simmer the Syrup

Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

  3. 10

    Soak the Baklava

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over the hot baklava. Make sure to cover it evenly.

  4. 11

    Let it Soak

Allow the baklava to soak in the syrup for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, before serving.
