Preparation Instructions
- 1
Brew the Root Beer Base
In a large pot, combine water, brown sugar, sassafras root, sarsaparilla root, vanilla extract, wintergreen leaves, cinnamon stick, and nutmeg. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar.
- 2
Simmer the Mixture
Once boiling, reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 30 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.
- 3
Strain the Mixture
After 30 minutes, remove the pot from heat and strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a clean container to remove the solid ingredients.
- 4
Cool the Brew
Allow the strained liquid to cool to room temperature. Once cool, sprinkle the yeast into the liquid and stir gently.
- 5
Fermentation
Cover the container with a cloth and let it sit at room temperature for 24-48 hours to ferment. Check it occasionally; it should start to bubble.
- 6
Carbonate the Root Beer
After fermentation, carefully pour the mixture into clean bottles, leaving some space at the top. Add carbonated water to each bottle before sealing them tightly.
- 7
Chill and Serve
Refrigerate the bottles for at least 2 hours before serving. Enjoy your homemade Saranac Rootbeer chilled!
