Calamari
Method
Preparation
- 1
Clean the Calamari
Begin by rinsing the fresh calamari under cold water. Remove the head, beak, and innards, then slice the body into rings about 1/2 inch thick.
- 2
Prepare the Breading
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well.
- 3
Cooking
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large, deep skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of the batter into it; if it sizzles and bubbles, it's ready.
- 5
Breading the Calamari
Dip each calamari ring into the wet mixture, then coat it in the dry breading mixture. Ensure the rings are well-coated.
- 6
Fry the Calamari
Carefully place the breaded calamari rings into the hot oil, being cautious not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.
- 7
Drain and Serve
Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried calamari from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot with marinara sauce.
