Dice the onion and garlic cloves. Roughly chop the ripe tomatoes.

Wash and pat dry the fresh basil leaves, then set aside.

Add the chopped tomatoes to the pot and stir well. Cook for about 10 minutes until the tomatoes begin to break down.

Pour in the vegetable broth, and add salt, black pepper, dried basil, and sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for 20 minutes.

Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth. Alternatively, you can transfer it in batches to a regular blender.

Stir in the heavy cream and fresh basil leaves. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes to heat through.
