Soup Base

Method

Soup Preparation

  1. 1

    Caramelize the Onions

In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced yellow onions and cook, stirring frequently, for about 30-40 minutes until they are deeply caramelized and golden brown.

  2. 2

    Add Garlic and Deglaze

Add the minced garlic and cook for another 2 minutes. Pour in the white wine to deglaze the pot, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom.

  3. 3

    Combine Broth and Seasonings

Add the beef broth, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper to the pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Crostini Preparation

  1. 4

    Prepare the Baguette

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet.

  2. 5

    Season and Bake

Drizzle the olive oil over the baguette slices and sprinkle with garlic powder. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes or until golden and crispy.

Final Assembly

  1. 6

    Serve the Soup

Ladle the hot soup into bowls. Top each bowl with a few crostini and sprinkle generously with shredded Swiss cheese.

  2. 7

    Melt the Cheese

Place the bowls under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Watch closely to avoid burning.

  3. 8

    Enjoy!

Serve immediately while hot and enjoy your delicious French Onion Soup!
