Method

Chowder Preparation

  1. 1

    Sauté Vegetables

In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, celery, and minced garlic. Sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are soft and translucent.

  2. 2

    Add Potatoes and Broth

Stir in the diced potatoes and chicken broth. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 10-15 minutes or until the potatoes are tender.

  3. 3

    Thicken the Chowder

In a separate bowl, mix the flour with a small amount of water to create a slurry. Gradually add this to the simmering pot while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Cook for an additional 5 minutes.

  4. 4

    Add Clams and Cream

Stir in the clams, heavy cream, salt, black pepper, thyme, and bay leaf. Simmer for another 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Remove the bay leaf before serving.

Bread Bowl Preparation

  1. 5

    Prepare Bread Bowls

While the chowder is simmering, take the bread bowls and cut off the tops. Hollow out the insides, leaving enough bread to hold the chowder. You can use the bread you remove for dipping.

Serving

  1. 6

    Serve Chowder

Ladle the hot clam chowder into each bread bowl and serve immediately. Enjoy your delicious clam chowder served in a warm bread bowl!
