Method
Cake Preparation
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Combine Mixtures
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Gradually stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth.
Bake the Cake
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cool the Cakes
Remove the cakes from the oven and allow to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
Molten Center Preparation
Melt Chocolate and Butter
In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the semi-sweet chocolate and unsalted butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until melted and smooth.
Assemble the Cake
Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Pour the melted chocolate mixture in the center, leaving about an inch border. Top with the second cake layer.
Serve
To serve, slice the cake into pieces and enjoy the molten chocolate center that flows out.
