Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix well until the batter is smooth.

  4. 4

    Incorporate Boiling Water

Slowly stir in the boiling water into the batter. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.

  5. 5

    Pour Batter into Pans

Evenly distribute the batter between the prepared cake pans.

  6. 6

    Bake the Cakes

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Cakes

Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Gooey Center Preparation

  1. 8

    Heat the Cream

In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer.

  2. 9

    Melt the Chocolate

Remove from heat and add the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Let sit for 2-3 minutes, then stir until smooth and fully melted.

  3. 10

    Assemble the Cake

Once the cakes are fully cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Pour the melted chocolate mixture in the center, leaving a border around the edges.

  4. 11

    Top with Second Layer

Place the second layer on top, pressing down gently to create a seal.

  5. 12

    Chill

Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the chocolate center to set slightly.
