Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Bread

Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Take the slices of artisan sourdough bread and lightly butter one side of each slice using 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter.

  2. 2

    Assemble the Sandwich

On the unbuttered side of two slices of bread, layer one slice of ham and half a cup of Gruyère cheese. Top with the other two slices of bread, buttered side facing out.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Toast the Sandwich

In a skillet over medium heat, place the assembled sandwiches and cook until the bread is golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side. Once toasted, transfer the sandwiches to a baking sheet and sprinkle the remaining Gruyère cheese on top. Place in the oven for 5-7 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  2. 4

    Fry the Eggs

In the same skillet, add a little more butter if needed, and crack the eggs into the pan. Cook over medium heat until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny, about 2-3 minutes.

  3. 5

    Serve

Once the cheese is melted on the sandwiches and the eggs are cooked, remove both from the heat. Place each sandwich on a plate and gently top with a sunny-side-up egg. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve immediately.
