Preparation Steps

1

Mix the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt. Gradually add water while stirring until the mixture forms a soft dough.

2

Knead the Dough

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If desired, add oil or ghee while kneading.

3

Rest the Dough

Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 30 minutes. This helps to make the roti softer.

4

Divide and Roll

After resting, divide the dough into small balls (about the size of a golf ball). Roll each ball into a flat circle about 6-8 inches in diameter on a floured surface.

5

Cook the Roti

Heat a skillet or tawa over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the rolled roti on the skillet. Cook for 30 seconds until bubbles form, then flip and cook for another 30 seconds. Press gently with a spatula for even cooking.

6

Puff the Roti

If desired, place the cooked roti directly over an open flame for a few seconds to puff it up, then remove and keep warm in a cloth.

7

Serve

Serve the roti warm with your favorite curries, vegetables, or lentils.
