Method
Preparation
- 1
Clean the Calamari
Rinse the calamari under cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Cut the calamari tubes into rings, about 1/2 inch thick. Set aside.
- 2
Prepare the Vegetables
Slice the onion into thin strips and the bell pepper into similar-sized strips. Set aside.
Batter Preparation
- 3
Mix the Batter
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Gradually add water while whisking until the batter is smooth and thick enough to coat the calamari.
Cooking
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large frying pan or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 5
Coat and Fry the Calamari
Dip the calamari rings into the batter, allowing any excess batter to drip off. Carefully place the battered calamari into the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.
- 6
Add the Vegetables
In the last minute of frying, add the onion and bell pepper strips to the oil, allowing them to fry briefly until they are tender and slightly crispy.
- 7
Drain and Serve
Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried calamari and vegetables from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Garnishing
- 8
Serve
Transfer the fried calamari and vegetables to a serving platter. Garnish with lemon wedges and fresh parsley. Serve hot.
