Method

Caramel Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Caramel

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon of water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves.

  2. 2

    Cook the Caramel

Allow the mixture to simmer without stirring until it turns a deep amber color, about 8-10 minutes. Be careful not to burn it.

  3. 3

    Pour the Caramel

Quickly pour the caramel into a round flan mold or individual ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.

Custard Preparation

  1. 4

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Mix the Custard

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the 4 eggs, 1 can of sweetened condensed milk, 1 can of evaporated milk, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon of sugar until smooth.

  3. 6

    Strain the Mixture

Strain the custard mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a separate bowl to remove any egg solids.

  4. 7

    Pour Custard into Mold

Pour the strained custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the flan mold or ramekins.

  5. 8

    Prepare for Baking

Place the flan mold or ramekins in a larger baking dish and fill the baking dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold.

  6. 9

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until the custard is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.

  7. 10

    Cool and Refrigerate

Remove the flan from the oven and let it cool to room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.

Serving

  1. 11

    Unmold the Flan

To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan and invert it onto a serving plate. The caramel will flow over the flan.

  2. 12

    Slice and Enjoy

Slice the flan into wedges and enjoy this creamy caramel custard dessert!
