Method

Meatball Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix the Meatball Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, chopped parsley, egg, salt, and black pepper. Mix until all ingredients are well combined.

  2. 2

    Form the Meatballs

With your hands, form the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. You should be able to make approximately 20-40 meatballs depending on size.

  3. 3

    Brown the Meatballs

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, cooking until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and set aside.

Tomato Sauce Preparation

  1. 4

    Sauté the Onions and Garlic

In the same skillet, add more olive oil if necessary and sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

  2. 5

    Add the Plum Tomatoes

Pour in the crushed plum tomatoes, and stir to combine with the onions and garlic. Season with salt, black pepper, and dried oregano.

  3. 6

    Simmer the Sauce

Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Allow it to cook for about 15 minutes to develop the flavors.

  4. 7

Add the Meatballs to the Sauce

Carefully add the browned meatballs to the simmering tomato sauce. Cover and cook for an additional 15-20 minutes until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce is thickened.

  5. 8

    Finish with Fresh Basil

Just before serving, stir in the chopped fresh basil into the sauce for added flavor.
