Method

Prepare the Dough

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Add the activated yeast mixture, yogurt, and olive oil (or melted ghee) to the flour mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    Let the Dough Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.

Cook the Naan

  1. 6

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to the highest setting (around 500°F or 260°C). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up.

  2. 7

    Shape the Naan

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it into an oval or tear shape, about ¼ inch thick.

  3. 8

    Optional Toppings

If desired, sprinkle minced garlic and chopped cilantro on top of each naan before cooking.

  4. 9

    Cook the Naan

Place the naan on a baking sheet or directly on the hot pizza stone. Bake for about 3-5 minutes, or until the naan puffs up and gets golden brown spots.

  5. 10

    Brush with Butter

Remove the naan from the oven and immediately brush with melted butter. Repeat with the remaining dough.
