Sushi Rice

Sushi Fillings

Nori and Garnishes

Method

Prepare Sushi Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the sushi rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear, removing excess starch.

  2. 2

    Cook the Rice

In a pot, combine rinsed sushi rice and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for another 10 minutes.

  3. 3

    Season the Rice

In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Transfer the cooked rice to a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture while being careful not to mash the rice.

Prepare Sushi Fillings

  1. 4

    Prepare Vegetables

Julienne the cucumber, carrot, and avocado into thin strips for easy rolling.

  2. 5

    Prepare Seafood

If using fresh salmon and tuna, slice them into long, thin pieces for sashimi and sushi fillings. Make sure everything is fresh and properly cleaned.

Assemble Sushi Rolls

  1. 6

    Lay Nori

Place a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat, shiny side facing down.

  2. 7

    Add Rice

Wet your hands to prevent sticking and take a handful of sushi rice. Spread the rice evenly over the nori, leaving about an inch at the top edge.

  3. 8

    Add Fillings

Lay your choice of fillings (vegetables, crab sticks, or seafood) in a line across the middle of the rice.

  4. 9

    Roll Sushi

Lift the edge of the bamboo mat and roll it over the fillings tightly. Continue rolling until you reach the edge of the nori. Seal the roll with a bit of water.

Slice and Serve

  1. 10

    Slice the Rolls

Using a sharp, wet knife, slice the sushi rolls into bite-sized pieces.

  2. 11

    Arrange and Serve

Arrange the sushi pieces on a platter. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
