Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly, about 1/8 inch thick. Place the sliced potatoes in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Onion

Peel and thinly slice the onion.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. 4

    Make the Cream Mixture

In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the heavy cream, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer, then remove from heat.

  3. 5

    Layer the Potatoes and Onions

In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by half of the sliced onions. Pour half of the cream mixture over the layers. Repeat with the remaining potatoes, onions, and cream mixture.

  4. 6

    Add the Cheese

Sprinkle the shredded cheddar and Gruyère cheese evenly over the top of the layered potatoes.

  5. 7

    Add Breadcrumbs

Sprinkle the breadcrumbs evenly over the cheese layer for a crispy topping.

  6. 8

    Bake

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.

Serving

  1. 9

    Serve the Dish

Let the au gratin potatoes cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your creamy and cheesy dish!
