Method

Cake Directions

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two heart-shaped cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  5. 5

    Bake

Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  6. 6

    Cool the Cakes

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

  7. 7

    Prepare Cream Cheese Frosting

In a medium bowl, beat together 8 oz cream cheese, 1/2 cup unsalted butter, 4 cups powdered sugar, and 1 tsp vanilla extract until smooth.

  8. 8

    Assemble the Cake

Once cooled, frost the top of one cake layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.

  9. 9

    Serve

Decorate with heart-shaped sprinkles if desired, slice, and serve your Red Velvet Heart Cake!
