Prepare the Patty

Form the Beef Patties
In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently until just combined. Form the mixture into two equal-sized patties, about 1/2 inch thick.

Sauté the Onions
Slice the onion into thin rings. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and caramelized, about 10 minutes.

Assemble the Patty Melt

Build the Sandwich
On one slice of rye bread, place a cheese-covered patty, followed by the sautéed onions. Top with another slice of rye bread. Repeat for the second sandwich.
Grill the Patty Melt

Grill the Sandwiches
In the same skillet, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter. Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet and grill until the bread is crispy and golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
Serve

Slice and Serve
Once grilled, remove the sandwiches from the skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve immediately.
