Method

Prepare the Patty

  1. 1

    Form the Beef Patties

In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently until just combined. Form the mixture into two equal-sized patties, about 1/2 inch thick.

Cook the Onions

  1. 2

    Sauté the Onions

Slice the onion into thin rings. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and caramelized, about 10 minutes.

Cook the Patties

  1. 3

    Cook the Beef Patties

In the same skillet used for the onions, add the beef patties. Cook for 3-4 minutes on one side, then flip. Place two slices of American cheese on each patty and cook for another 3-4 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the patties are cooked to your desired doneness.

Assemble the Patty Melt

  1. 4

    Build the Sandwich

On one slice of rye bread, place a cheese-covered patty, followed by the sautéed onions. Top with another slice of rye bread. Repeat for the second sandwich.

Grill the Patty Melt

  1. 5

    Grill the Sandwiches

In the same skillet, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter. Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet and grill until the bread is crispy and golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.

Serve

  1. 6

    Slice and Serve

Once grilled, remove the sandwiches from the skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve immediately.
