For the Patty Melt

Optional Condiments

Method

Prepare the Beef Patty

  1. 1

    Season the Beef

In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently to avoid overworking the meat.

  2. 2

    Form the Patty

Divide the seasoned beef into two equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 3/4 inch thick.

Cook the Onions

  1. 3

    Sauté the Onions

Slice the large onion thinly. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the onions and cook until soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and set aside.

Cook the Patties

  1. 4

    Grill the Patties

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Once melted, add the beef patties and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness.

  2. 5

    Add Cheese

In the last minute of cooking, place two slices of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover the skillet until the cheese melts.

Assemble the Patty Melt

  1. 6

    Butter the Bread

Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Use the remaining butter to coat the skillet.

  2. 7

    Build the Sandwich

Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, in the skillet. Add a cheesy beef patty, a portion of sautéed onions, and another slice of bread, buttered side up. Repeat to create a second sandwich.

Cook the Sandwich

  1. 8

    Grill the Sandwich

Cook the sandwich for about 3-4 minutes on one side, or until golden brown. Flip carefully and cook for another 3-4 minutes on the other side.

  2. 9

    Slice and Serve

Once both sides are golden brown and the cheese is melted, remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve warm with optional condiments like Dijon mustard, ketchup, and pickles.
