Method

Pickles Preparation

  1. 1

    Drain Pickles

Open the jar of dill pickles and drain the liquid. You can use a colander for better drainage.

  2. 2

    Slice Pickles

If using whole pickles, slice them into 1/4 inch thick rounds. If using pickle chips, skip this step.

Batter Preparation

  1. 3

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of cornmeal, 1 tsp of baking powder, 1 tsp of garlic powder, 1 tsp of onion powder, 0.5 tsp of salt, and 0.5 tsp of black pepper. Whisk until well mixed.

  2. 4

    Add Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup of buttermilk and 1 large egg until combined. Gradually add this mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. The batter should be thick.

Frying

  1. 5

    Heat Oil

In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat 2 cups of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy.

  2. 6

    Coat Pickles

Take the drained pickle slices and dip them into the batter, ensuring they are fully coated.

  3. 7

    Fry Pickles

Carefully place the coated pickles into the hot oil in batches. Do not overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown, flipping them halfway through.

  4. 8

    Drain Excess Oil

Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried pickles from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil.

Serving

  1. 9

    Serve with Dressing

Serve the fried pickles hot with 0.5 cup of ranch dressing on the side for dipping.
