Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Pasta

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt and the macaroni. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.

  2. 2

    Drain and Set Aside

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 3

    Melt Butter

In the same pot over medium heat, melt the butter. Make sure it does not brown.

  2. 4

    Add Flour

Once the butter has melted, whisk in the flour to create a roux. Cook for about 1 minute, stirring continuously.

  3. 5

    Add Milk

Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  4. 6

    Add Cheeses and Seasoning

Reduce the heat to low and stir in the cheddar and mozzarella cheeses until melted and creamy. Add salt, black pepper, and garlic powder, mixing well.

Combining and Serving

  1. 7

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce. Stir well until all the pasta is coated with the creamy cheese mixture.

  2. 8

    Prepare Topping (Optional)

If using, mix breadcrumbs with grated Parmesan cheese in a small bowl.

  3. 9

    Serve

Serve the mac and cheese immediately, optionally sprinkling the breadcrumb and Parmesan mixture on top for added texture.
