Burger Preparation
- 1
Caramelize the Onions
Slice the onion thinly. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onions, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- 2
Prepare the Smash Patties
Divide the ground beef into two equal portions (about 4 oz each). Form them loosely into balls without overworking the meat.
- 3
Cook the Patties
Heat the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet over high heat. Once hot, place the meat balls in the skillet and immediately smash them down with a spatula to form thin patties. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on one side.
- 4
Add Cheese
Flip the patties and place a slice of American cheese on each patty. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted.
- 5
Assemble the Burger
Toast the burger buns lightly. Spread Shack sauce on the bottom bun, add the smashed patty with melted cheese, top with caramelized onions and pickles, and finish with the top bun.
