1. Prepare the Mushrooms
Clean the button mushrooms by wiping them with a damp cloth. Remove the stems if desired, but leave the caps whole.
2. Make the Batter
In a large bowl, mix the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients until just mixed.
3. Heat the Oil
In a deep pan or fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
4. Fry the Mushrooms
Dip each mushroom into the batter, allowing excess to drip off. Carefully place the battered mushrooms into the hot oil, frying in batches until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and drain on paper towels.
5. Serve
