For the Patty Melt

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Caramelize the Onions

Slice the large onion into thin rings. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Cook for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Beef Patty

In a bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Form the mixture into two equal patties.

Cooking the Patty Melt

  1. 3

    Cook the Beef Patties

In the same skillet used for the onions, add a tablespoon of butter and heat over medium-high heat. Add the beef patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking to allow it to melt.

  2. 4

    Assemble the Patty Melt

Once the cheese has melted, remove the patties from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter and place two slices of marble rye bread on the skillet. Layer each slice of bread with a patty, a generous portion of caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Top with the remaining slices of marble rye bread.

  3. 5

    Grill the Sandwich

Cook the sandwiches for about 3-4 minutes on each side, adding the remaining butter to the skillet as needed, until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is fully melted.
