Preparation
- 1
Cook the Pasta
In a large pot of salted boiling water, add the penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- 2
Grill the Sausage
Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium heat. Grill the Italian fennel sausage links for about 8-10 minutes, turning occasionally until fully cooked and browned. Remove from the grill and let them cool slightly, then slice them into bite-sized pieces.
Making the Sauce
- 3
Sauté Garlic
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- 4
Add Tomatoes and Cream
Stir in the crushed tomatoes and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and add the heavy cream. Mix well and let it simmer for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
- 5
Season the Sauce
Season the sauce with salt and black pepper to taste. Stir in the sliced grilled sausage and let it cook together for another 2-3 minutes.
Combining
- 6
Mix Pasta with Sauce
Add the cooked penne pasta to the skillet with the sauce. Toss gently to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce.
- 7
Serve
Serve the Pasta Rustico in bowls, garnished with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and torn basil leaves.
