Method

Base Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Do not overmix.

  5. 5

    Pour Batter

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly.

  6. 6

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Base

Remove from the oven and let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting Preparation

  1. 8

    Cream Butter

In a medium bowl, beat the unsalted butter with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.

  2. 9

    Add Dry Ingredients

Gradually add the powdered sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder, mixing on low speed until combined.

  3. 10

    Adjust Consistency

Add milk and vanilla extract, and continue to beat on medium speed until the frosting is light and fluffy, adjusting with more milk if necessary.

  4. 11

    Frost the Cake

Once the cake is completely cooled, spread the frosting evenly over the top of the cake using a spatula.

Garnishing (optional)

  1. 12

    Add Garnish

Sprinkle chocolate shavings and fresh berries on top of the frosted cake as desired.
