Method

Prepare the Clams

  1. 1

    Clean the Clams

Rinse the Maine whole belly clams under cold water to remove any sand or debris.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Breading

In a shallow dish, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, salt, and black pepper. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk.

  3. 3

    Bread the Clams

Dip each clam into the egg mixture, then dredge in the flour-cornmeal mixture, ensuring they are thoroughly coated.

Fry the Clams

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot.

  2. 5

    Fry the Clams

Fry the breaded clams in the hot oil for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Prepare the Coleslaw

  1. 6

    Mix the Coleslaw Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the shredded cabbage, shredded carrots, mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Toss until well combined.

  2. 7

    Chill the Coleslaw

Cover the coleslaw and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Prepare the Fries

  1. 8

    Fry the Potatoes

In a separate pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the cut potatoes and fry until golden and crispy, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 9

    Season the Fries

Remove the fries from the oil, drain on paper towels, and season with salt while hot.

Serve

  1. 10

    Plate the Dinner

On a serving plate, arrange the crispy fried clams, a generous portion of coleslaw, and house fries. Serve with tartar or cocktail sauce on the side.
