Preparation
- 1
Marinate the Shrimp
In a large bowl, combine the buttermilk and Cajun seasoning. Add the shrimp, ensuring they are fully submerged. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best flavor.
Breading
- 2
Prepare the Breading Mixture
In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, cornmeal, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
Dipping Sauce
- 3
Make the Dipping Sauce
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, hot sauce, lemon juice, and garlic powder. Mix well until smooth. Adjust seasoning to taste and set aside.
Frying
- 4
Fry the Shrimp
In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Remove the shrimp from the buttermilk marinade, letting excess drip off. Dredge each shrimp in the breading mixture, pressing lightly to adhere. Working in batches, carefully add the shrimp to the hot oil. Fry until golden brown and cooked through, about 2-3 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
