Prepare the batter
In a large bowl, mix the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and black pepper together. In another bowl, whisk the egg and milk. Combine the wet and dry ingredients until smooth.

Heat the oil
In a deep skillet or fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

Coat the fish
Dip each fish fillet into the batter, ensuring it's fully coated.

Fry the fish
Carefully place the coated fish fillets into the hot oil. Fry for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through.

Drain and serve
Remove the fish from the oil and let drain on paper towels. Serve hot.

Prepare the potatoes
Peel and cut the potatoes into thin strips for fries.

Fry the fries
In a deep fryer or large pot, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry the potato strips in batches until they are golden brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes.

Remove the fries from the oil and let drain on paper towels. Season with salt to taste.
