Prep Work

  1. 1

    Prep the Ingredients

Slice the sausage link, Italian beef, or chicken into bite-sized pieces. If using shrimp, peel and devein them. Dice the red onions, chop the mushrooms, and tomatoes. Roughly chop the fresh basil.

Cooking

  1. 2

    Cook the Pasta

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the cavatelli pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

  2. 3

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced red onions and sauté for 2-3 minutes until translucent. Then add the chopped mushrooms and cook for another 3-4 minutes until softened.

  3. 4

    Add the Protein

Add your choice of sliced sausage, Italian beef, chicken, or shrimp to the skillet. Cook until the protein is browned and cooked through, approximately 5-7 minutes.

  4. 5

    Incorporate Tomatoes and Sauce

Stir in the diced tomatoes and tomato sauce. Add crushed red pepper, salt, and black pepper to taste. Let it simmer for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

  5. 6

    Combine with Pasta

Add the cooked cavatelli pasta to the skillet and gently toss to coat in the sauce and combine all ingredients. Add the chopped fresh basil and mix well.

Serving

  1. 7

    Plate and Serve

Serve the Pasta Apulia hot, garnished with additional fresh basil if desired.
