Dough Ingredients

Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Once the yeast is activated, pour it into the flour mixture along with olive oil. Mix until a dough begins to form.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Shaping and Baking

  1. 6

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. 7

    Shape the Breadsticks

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal pieces (about 12). Roll each piece into a long stick, about 8-10 inches long.

  3. 8

    Prepare Baking Sheet

Place the shaped breadsticks on a lined baking sheet, ensuring they have space between them.

  4. 9

    Add Toppings

In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with garlic powder and dried Italian herbs. Brush this mixture over the breadsticks. Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese (or Pecorino Romano) on top.

  5. 10

    Bake

Bake the breadsticks in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown.

  6. 11

    Serve

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving with your choice of sauces: marinara, cheddar cheese, housemade Pecorino Romano, or garlic butter.
