Pasta and Sauce

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Pasta

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook until al dente, according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.

  2. 2

    Make the Sauce

In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil. Once hot, add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Cheese Mixture

In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, grated parmesan cheese, and chopped parsley. Mix until well combined and set aside.

Assembly

  1. 4

    Combine Ingredients

In a large bowl, mix the cooked ziti with the prepared tomato sauce, reserving about 1 cup of sauce for topping. Stir in the ricotta mixture until evenly distributed.

  2. 5

    Layer the Ziti

In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, spread half of the ziti mixture evenly. Top with half of the reserved sauce and half of the shredded mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers with the remaining ziti mixture, sauce, and mozzarella cheese.

Baking

  1. 6

    Bake

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

  2. 7

    Serve

Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm, garnished with additional parsley if desired.
