Cooking Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt. In a small saucepan, heat milk and butter over medium heat until warm and melted. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Add the warm milk mixture and egg to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.

  2. 2

    Knead and Rise

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  3. 3

    Roll and Cut

Once the dough has risen, turn it out onto a floured surface and roll it out to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into squares or rectangles using a sharp knife or dough cutter.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep pot or fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Fry the Beignets

Carefully drop the cut dough pieces into the hot oil, a few at a time. Fry until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and let them drain on paper towels.

  6. 6

    Serve

While still warm, dust the beignets with powdered sugar and serve with apple butter on the side.
