Batter and Coating

Method

Preparation and Cooking

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rings. Carefully separate the rings and set them aside.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well. Gradually add the cold water and whisk until you achieve a smooth batter.

  3. 3

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Then, roll the battered onion ring in the bread crumbs until well-coated. Place the coated rings on a plate.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it; if it sizzles, the oil is ready.

  5. 5

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until they are golden brown and crispy, turning them occasionally for even cooking.

  6. 6

    Drain and Serve

Once golden brown, remove the onion rings from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
