Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

In a fine-mesh strainer, rinse the basmati rice under cold running water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.

  2. 2

    Soak the Saffron

In a small bowl, soak the saffron threads in 2 tablespoons of hot water. Allow them to steep for about 10 minutes to release their color and flavor.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Cook the Rice

In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed basmati rice, 2 cups of water, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

  2. 4

    Add Saffron

Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and simmer for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, add the saffron water (including the threads) to the rice.

  3. 5

    Fluff the Rice

Remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes. Then, use a fork to fluff the rice gently, incorporating the saffron into the grains.

Optional Additions

  1. 6

    Sauté Optional Ingredients

In a separate skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter or heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until the onion is translucent and fragrant (about 3-4 minutes).

  2. 7

    Add Peas

Stir in the peas and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until they are warmed through.

  3. 8

    Combine with Rice

Gently fold the sautéed mixture into the saffron rice until well combined. Adjust seasoning with salt if necessary.
