Method
Prepare the Arepa Dough
- 1
Mix the Dough Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the pre-cooked corn flour (both yellow and white) and salt. Gradually add warm water while mixing with your hands until a soft and kneadable dough forms.
- 2
Shape the Arepas
Divide the dough into two equal parts. Shape one part into a round patty approximately 1/2 inch thick for the yellow arepa and the other part into a similar round patty for the white arepa.
Cook the Arepas
- 3
Cook on a Griddle
Preheat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place both arepas on the skillet and cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and have a slightly crispy exterior.
- 4
Add Cheese
After flipping the arepas, sprinkle cheese on top of each one during the last few minutes of cooking. Cover the skillet with a lid to help the cheese melt.
Serve the Arepas
- 5
Optional Butter Finish
Once cooked, you can spread a little butter on the arepas while they are still warm for added flavor.
- 6
Serve Warm
Serve the yellow and white arepas warm, either separately or stacked together, and enjoy as a delicious snack or meal.
