Mix the Base Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole milk, heavy cream, and granulated sugar. Whisk together until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Add Flavoring
For vanilla ice cream, add the vanilla extract and mix well. If making chocolate ice cream, add the cocoa powder along with the vanilla extract and mix until smooth.
Chilling

Chill the Mixture
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until it is thoroughly chilled.
Churning

Churn the Ice Cream
Once the mixture is chilled, pour it into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.

Add Optional Ingredients
If desired, add chocolate chips or chopped nuts during the last few minutes of churning to incorporate them into the ice cream.
Freezing

Transfer the churned ice cream to an airtight container and freeze for at least 4 hours or until firm.
