Method

Preparation of Herbal Mixture

  1. 1

    Combine Herbs

In a large bowl, combine the dried wormwood, chamomile flowers, mint leaves, lemon balm, thyme, anise seeds, and fennel seeds. Mix well to ensure that the herbs are evenly distributed.

  2. 2

    Infuse Alcohol

Place the combined herbal mixture into a large glass jar. Pour the neutral grain alcohol or vodka over the herbs. Seal the jar tightly and let it steep in a cool, dark place for at least 2 weeks, shaking it gently every few days.

Making the Syrup

  1. 3

    Dissolve Sugar

In a saucepan, combine 300g of sugar and 500ml of water. Heat gently over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar has fully dissolved. Once dissolved, bring the mixture to a boil, then remove it from heat and let it cool.

  2. 4

    Combine Syrup with Infused Alcohol

Once the herbal infusion is ready, strain the mixture to remove the herbs, using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Combine the strained infusion with the cooled syrup in a large mixing bowl or jar.

Final Flavoring and Bottling

  1. 5

    Add Flavorings

Add the cinnamon stick, vanilla extract, and orange zest to the mixture. Stir well to ensure that the flavors are evenly distributed.

  2. 6

    Bottle the Cloosterbitter

Using a funnel, pour the mixture into clean, sterilized bottles. Seal the bottles tightly and label them as Boomsma Cloosterbitter. Let them sit for at least a week to allow the flavors to meld before consuming.
