Method

Cooking the Patty Melt

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Slice the large onion into thin rings. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the onions and sauté until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.

  2. 2

    Form the Patties

In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form them into patties, making them slightly larger than the slices of bread.

  3. 3

    Cook the Patties

In the same skillet used for the onions, add another tablespoon of butter and heat over medium-high heat. Add the beef patties and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or until they reach your desired doneness.

  4. 4

    Assemble the Melt

Once the patties are cooked, place a slice of American cheese and a slice of Swiss cheese on top of each patty. Allow the cheese to melt for about 1-2 minutes.

  5. 5

    Prepare the Bread

While the cheese melts, spread butter on one side of each slice of marble rye bread. Place two slices, buttered side down, in the skillet over medium heat.

  6. 6

    Grill the Sandwich

On top of the bread in the skillet, place two cheese-topped patties and a generous portion of the caramelized onions. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up. Grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy.

  7. 7

    Serve

Once grilled, remove the patty melts from the skillet, slice them in half, and serve hot with your favorite condiments or sides.
