Burger Patties

Prepare the Patties
In a bowl, mix the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Divide the mixture into two equal parts and shape them into burger patties.

Cook the Patties
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. Place 2 slices of American cheese and 2 slices of Swiss cheese on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.

Slice the Onions
Peel and thinly slice the onion into rings.

Assembling the Patty Melt

Butter the Bread
Spread 1 tablespoon of butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.

Build the Sandwich
In the same skillet used for the patties, place one slice of rye bread, buttered side down. Layer one burger patty with melted cheese, followed by a generous portion of fried onions, and then top with another patty. Place another slice of buttered rye bread on top, buttered side up.

Grill the Sandwich
Grill the sandwich over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is gooey.
