Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Manicotti

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the manicotti pasta shells and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside to cool.

Meatball Preparation

  1. 2

    Make the Meatballs

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, egg, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until well combined.

  2. 3

    Form the Meatballs

Using your hands, form the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. You should get approximately 20 meatballs.

Sauce Preparation

  1. 4

    Cook the Sauce

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

  2. 5

    Add Tomatoes

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Cooking Meatballs

  1. 6

    Brown the Meatballs

In a separate skillet, add a little oil if needed and brown the meatballs on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. They do not need to be fully cooked through.

Assembly

  1. 7

    Assemble the Manicotti

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Using a small spoon or piping bag, fill each manicotti shell with the browned meatballs, placing them in a single layer in a large baking dish.

  2. 8

    Top with Sauce

Pour the prepared tomato sauce over the stuffed manicotti, ensuring they are well coated.

  3. 9

    Add Cheese

Sprinkle the grated mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the top.

Baking

  1. 10

    Bake the Dish

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
