Gnocchi

Method

Gnocchi Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Boil the potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, approximately 20-25 minutes. Drain and let cool slightly.

  2. 2

    Make the Gnocchi Dough

Peel the cooled potatoes and mash them in a large bowl. Add flour, egg, and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour.

  3. 3

    Shape the Gnocchi

Divide the dough into smaller pieces and roll each piece into a long rope about 1/2 inch thick. Cut into 1-inch pieces and press each piece gently with a fork to create ridges.

Meatballs Preparation

  1. 4

    Make the Meatball Mixture

In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until fully combined.

  2. 5

    Form the Meatballs

Shape the mixture into 1-inch meatballs and place them on a baking sheet.

  3. 6

    Cook the Meatballs

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake the meatballs for 20-25 minutes until browned and cooked through.

Sauce Preparation

  1. 7

    Sauté the Aromatics

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute.

  2. 8

    Make the Sauce

Add the canned tomatoes, dried basil, oregano, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Simmer the sauce for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Assembly

  1. 9

    Combine Gnocchi and Meatballs

In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the gnocchi for 2-3 minutes until they float to the surface. Drain and add to the sauce along with the baked meatballs. Toss gently to combine.

  2. 10

    Serve

Serve the gnocchi with meatballs hot, garnished with additional Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley if desired.
