Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Wash and Cut Potatoes

Wash the Russet potatoes under cold water to remove any dirt. After washing, peel the potatoes if desired, then cut them into uniform sticks, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.

  2. 2

    Soak the Potatoes

Place the cut potatoes in a large bowl of cold water and let them soak for at least 30 minutes. This helps to remove excess starch and makes for crispier fries.

Frying

  1. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a deep fryer or a large heavy-bottomed pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy.

  2. 4

    Dry the Potatoes

After soaking, drain the potatoes and pat them dry with paper towels. This step is crucial to prevent oil splattering.

  3. 5

    Fry the Potatoes

Carefully add the dried potato sticks to the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for 4-5 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

  4. 6

    Drain and Season

Once the fries are cooked, use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. While they are still hot, sprinkle with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder to taste.

Serving

  1. 7

    Serve

Serve the French fries hot, either on their own or with your favorite dipping sauces.
