Preparation

  1. 1

    Wash and Trim Asparagus

Rinse the asparagus under cold water to remove any dirt. Trim the woody ends of the asparagus by snapping them off or cutting them about 1-2 inches from the bottom.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Batter

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Gradually add water to the dry ingredients while whisking until you achieve a smooth batter.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test if the oil is ready by dropping a small amount of the batter into the oil; it should sizzle and bubble.

  2. 4

    Coat Asparagus in Batter

Dip each asparagus spear into the batter, making sure it is fully coated. Allow any excess batter to drip off before frying.

  3. 5

    Fry the Asparagus

Carefully place the battered asparagus in the hot oil, a few at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

  4. 6

    Drain and Serve

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried asparagus from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot as an appetizer or side dish.
